As many of you already know, the court case involving the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church was argued today in front of the Supreme Court of the United States. I will leave my personal opinions out of this, but a comment I saw on the Wall Street Journal article is worth repeating:

"As despicable as the Westboro group may be, and while I sympathize with Mr. Snyder, looking for an exception to the First Amendment is playing with fire. If hurting someone’s feelings, even intentionally, is the standard, then half the comment posters on this site could get sued. "

The Westboro Baptist Church does an incredible job of creating an emotional response with their picketing, albeit a very negative one. But, in the end, it really all comes down to the First Amendment. It will be interesting to see how this one turns out.
